If the Goal in Life is…

on

If the goal in life is to be happy then God would not have invented babies who wake up at 2:00 AM. The sleep-deprived young mothers would rather be sleeping. If the goal in life is to be happy then plants that become food would not require so much attention. If the goal in life is to be happy then children would always obey. If the goal in life is to be happy then we would not experience floods and famine. If the goal in life is to be happy then all husbands would bring home six-figure incomes. If the goal in life is to be happy then travel to exotic places would be free. But, we all experience these challenges because the goal in life is so much more. My friend’s husband who left her for another woman “Because God wants him to be happy” is lying to himself and everyone else. “To have and to hold, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, until death do you part”, etc., says little about the short-lived happiness jolts that we all want to enjoy each day. “Nurture your love”, says my friend. Grow up, men. You, too, do not look the same. As my friend laments that we are all plainer and squishier now than in the beginning, but we both like keeping promises. “A good and faithful wife can go far with a good and faithful husband”, she says with quiet reserve.
